Boondocking Issues
The Escapees RV Club is a strong advocate of the proper and sensible use of parking facilities. We own eight RV parks across the country, so we understand the perspective of RV park owners, but also see the importance of an alternative resource. We are specifically concerned about the restricting of overnight stops in commercial business parking lots such as Wal-Mart. This resource is a privilege that we strive to defend for the RV traveler.

What is Boondocking?
Boondocking means wilderness camping out in the "boondocks." This type of camping, usually in Public Lands, (State and National Forests, BLM lands, etc.) is free, or very low cost. Since boondocks is defined as slang for rough backwoods or bush country, most boondocking opportunities are away from cities, blacktop, and civilization in general. In many boondocking areas, you just find a place and park, making sure there are no signs in the area prohibiting camping or overnight parking.

Dry Camping means no water, electricity, or sewer hookups and may be free or paid. You might dry camp in a city park, a state or federal campground, a private RV park, or a parking lot. Overnight stops at Wal-Mart and Flying J's are examples of dry camping.

How can you help?
We ask all Escapees members (and encourage all RVers) to abide by certain etiquette standards, and we provide a letter to them so that they can pass the dry-camping creed on to others who appear to be abusing this privilege. We feel that enforcement of this code will do much to reduce the tensions between retailers who encourage RVers and the campground owners who may feel slighted.

A copy of the etiquette letter is available for downloading under the Parks and Parking section.
