GOLDEN GATE CHAPTER HISTORY
Yesterday
The Golden Gate Chapter has the distinction of being the first local chapter of the Escapee organization. It all began under the palm trees of the Yuma Escapade on February 27, 1984.
More than 100 SKP's were present and were interested to join the chapter being formed by Don Lawrence. He had a crazy idea - that people would like to have a local organization to sponsor SKP "family" activities like rallies and luncheons. The Petersons put Don's idea on the agenda
at Yuma to see if it would work.
The first of four rallies that year was held at Watsonville on May 5-8, and was organized by Merrilyn Thompson. Only 11 rigs and 29 people attended that rally, but the SKP magic got the group going.
Don was elected first Chapter President, Wilma Jones Vice President and Merilyn became Secretary / Treasurer. Later rallies were held at Eureka May 24-28, Dixon June 21, and King City September 20-23.
These rallies set the pattern for many of the activities to follow - parking crew, potlucks, brown-bag luncheons, morning coffee and happy hour circle.
The early rallies also lead to a set of bylaws that form the basis for all later chapters.
One of the first activities of the new Chapter was to look into the feasibility of starting a Co-op park, now known as Park Sierra. It is located along Hiway 41, near Coarsegold and was completed in November 1991. John Hassler served as the Project Manager during the construction phase. Many individuals contributed their skills and time to build the sites, set up the utilities, construct the buildings and bake the cookies that fueled the workers.
Many current residents of the Co-op park hold joint membership in chapters 1, 31 (Central Coast) & 38 (Mother Lode).
Don Lawrence, our Chapter's founder, passed away in December, 2000.
