Big Bend Area – Winter Home Base HOP-
(Head Out Program)

February 1 - March 2

Location: Big Bend Area

The Escapees RV Club will be making your winter dreams come true with a new type of event called Winter Home Base as a way we can travel and still socialize while staying safe in the winter months; preferably somewhere you can enjoy the outdoors!

The area you will visit is often called “The Gateway to the Big Bend,” there are radiant night skies, cowboy hospitality, and friendly folks. The sun always shines, and the skies are not cloudy all day.

The Winter Home Base HOPs will be a relaxed gathering of friends. The HOP host at the Winter Home Base location will organize a few activities each week where you can safely catch up with one another and have fun. The rest of the time will be yours to relax, discover the Big Bend area, and make new friends.

Some of the activities will include a visit to McDonald Observatory, which has the Hobby-Eberly Telescope, one of the world’s largest.

During the month-long HOP event, there is a wide array of places to visit and see. One of the best surviving examples of a frontier military post in the Southwest is Fort Davis, which was tactically located to protect the mail and freight wagons on the Trans-Pecos portion of the San Antonio to El Paso Road on the Chihuahua Trail.

Visit the Chihuahua Desert, which is the largest desert in North America. It is the most geographically diverse dry region in the world. Learn about the climate, plants, and animals that make this area so fascinating.

Enjoy the Big Bend National Park and the Texas State Park on hikes, birding and beautiful scenic drives. Did you know the state park is the largest in Texas? You may also want to soak in the Hot Springs, take a trip to the Mexican Village of Boquillas (don’t forget your passport), kayak, or canoe part of the Rio Grande, view the sunset through the Window, or stop and visit the Fossil Discovery Exhibit.

The mountains, deserts, and the river combine to make this area an amazing outdoor playground for hikers, campers, canoers, and birders.

In Marfa, you might want to visit Building 98, built from 1895 – 1920 as officers’ quarters and served as headquarters for the Big Bend Military during the Mexican Revolution. Building 98 housed the WWII German POWs, and murals were painted by two prisoners, who were among the prisoners placed at Fort Russell at the request of General George Patton. Building 98 is a historic building, listed on the National Register of Historic Sites, and is a Registered Historic Texas Landmark.

Before setting out to view the Marfa Lights, visit the beautiful and historic Hotel Paisano. Built-in 1930, it was one of the most elegant hotels of its time. In 1955 the Hotel Paisano was used as headquarters to film the classic movie “Giant,” starring James Dean, Elizabeth Taylor, and Rock Hudson.

Just outside of Marfa, you may get a chance to see the Marfa Lights. Native American residents knew about the Marfa Mystery Lights long before the first recorded sighting in 1883. The lights are not always there but starting at dusk and deep into the night is the best time to see these mysterious dancing lights. The lights can be white, red, blue, orange, or green. They seem to appear randomly and move throughout the sky just above the tree line. They will move toward you, away from you, to the right and left of you. The terrain under the lights is rough and rugged; no houses in the area.

Some movies filmed in the Marfa area are Giant, The Gambler, Lonesome Dove, The Good Old Boys, Streets of Laredo, Dead Man’s Walk, There Will Be Blood, No Country for Old Men, and Dancer. Texas Population 81 was filmed in Ft. Davis.

Escapees have a relaxed but fun-filled time lined up for you while still trying to be safe by wearing masks and by social distancing.

Gathering safely and responsibly

Because we want to make sure everyone has fun while keeping safety as our top priority, the Winter Home Base Convergence format will be different from a “normal” 7-day HOP. Some of these differences will include:

  • Under the club’s “Safer-in-Place” guidelines to minimize unnecessary travel, each RV must stay at the HOP park for a minimum of one monthHowever, we encourage you to stay longer! (When you have a good spot with friends, why move?)
  • We will be following applicable CDC and state guidelines and an additional set of detailed health and safety rules that we have developed specifically for Escapees gatherings.
  • When you arrive, you will receive a name badge, and that will be your entry pass to our group activities.
  • There will be no potlucks or sharing of food. (But we’ll make up for that with plenty of bring-your-own drinks and snacks to happy hours and bring your own meals!)
  • Masks will be required at any time that adequate social distancing is not possible.
  • Carpooling to offsite activities is discouraged. We recommend driving in your own vehicle.
  • If you develop symptoms of COVID-19 or have any known exposure to COVID-19 during your stay, you will be required to isolate yourself in your RV for 14 days.
