Outdoor adventure and Old West history in the Salt Lake Valley

Nestled in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains and overlooking Great Salt Lake, the largest inland lake in the western United States, the Ogden and Salt Lake City area of Utah is home to a pioneering past and an exciting future. During the Northern Utah Hangout, you’ll get to experience some of the region’s most adventurous activities while learning of its rich history.

Hangout activities

Are you ready for some thrills? Then you’ll enjoy this optional two-hour guided ATV safari up Ogden’s Waterfall Canyon! Explore Utah’s breathtaking off-road backcountry aboard a six-passenger all-terrain vehicle. You’ll discover an abandoned silver mine, a remote 300’ waterfall, and seldom-seen, awe-inspiring overlooks of the Great Salt Lake. (Watch the video below for a preview.) Alternatively, you can hike the challenging trail up to the waterfall on your own at no charge.

Or if you are really seeking an adrenaline rush, combine the ATV Safari with the Waterfall Canyon Via Ferrata Adventure. Via ferrata (Italian for “iron road”) is a mountain-climbing method that lets average outdoor enthusiasts enjoy the views and thrills usually reserved for elite climbers. After riding an ATV to the base of the cliff, you’ll climb the wall of Waterfall Canyon using iron steps–picture rebar in the form of a wide U–embedded in the rock.  You don’t need an extreme level of fitness; if you can climb a ladder and handle a 2-mile hike, you can climb the Via Ferrata. You’re always attached to a steel safety cable, no ropes or knots are required, and you remain within talking distance of your fellow climbers. See the video below for a taste of the experience.

We will spend a day exploring beautiful Antelope Island State Park, located on the largest of ten islands located within the Great Salt Lake, on a professionally guided electric bike tour. The 42 square miles of Antelope Island are home to free-ranging bison, mule deer, bighorn sheep, antelope and many other desert animals. You’ll enjoy amazing views and great photo opportunities all around you. Riding an electric bike gives you the freedom to ride further, explore more, and cover more ground in a shorter period of time, while having a blast!

This optional tour lasts 1 1/2 to 2 hours, and includes a helmet, orange vest, an e-bike  and your professional guides. If you have your own e-bike, you are welcome to bring it instead and participate in the tour at a discounted rate. Due to the challenging terrain and longer distances involved, non-powered bikes are not permitted on the tour. After the tour and lunch, we’ll spend the afternoon exploring the historic Farr Ranch and the rest of Antelope Island by car.

Lace up your walking shoes for a 2 1/2-mile scavenger hunt adventure through the heart of Salt Lake City. You and your team will follow clues to solve 19 challenges together as you explore the rich history of the city at sites like the Union Pacific Depot, Temple Square and the State Capitol Building. Afterwards, you’ll meet up with your fellow contestants at a downtown Salt Lake City restaurant for dinner, beverages and bragging rights.

In 1869, workers for the Central Pacific and Union Pacific railroads put nearby Ogden on the map when they drove the ceremonial “golden spike” that completed the first transcontinental rail line–one of the greatest technological achievements of the 19th century. During our visit to Golden Spike National Historical Park, we’ll see the Last Spike Site, get an up close view of two working Victorian-era replica locomotives, and hike or drive on portions of the original railroad grade.

On Sunday morning, we will have the opportunity to attend a 30-minute live broadcast of Music & the Spoken Word, featuring the famed Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square in Salt Lake City. Since 1929, nearly the lifetime of radio, the Choir has been a phenomenon of broadcasting, and has been inducted into the National Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame and the National Radio Hall of Fame. After the broadcast, we’ll take a guided tour of Temple Square.

We’ll play disc golf on Ogden’s new Fort Buenaventura course, the site of the 2020 Professional Disc Golf Association’s World Championship tournament the following month. The director of the tournament and other members of Team Utah Open, the local PDGA club, will give us “beginner’s-level” instruction to help us learn this fun and fast-growing sport.

On a Highlights of Ogden guided tour through the Railroad, Firearms and Classic Car Museums in the town’s historic Union Station, we’ll discover how the transcontinental railroad transformed northern Utah, how prominent pioneers used their ingenuity to create Browning Gun designs and other inventions, and how transportation changes over time affected the infrastructure of Ogden and the surrounding area.

Of course, as at all Escapees Hangouts, there will also be plenty of time at the campground for socializing and making new friends, including open house-style rig tours, an interactive game night, campfires, dinners at area restaurants, and more!
