Let There Be Light (Part 2)

It has been a while since we talked about LED lights (“RV Gadget Box,” September/October 2010), so I wanted to share a recent discovery with you. This is about the brightest, smallest lantern I have ever seen: the Rayovac Sportsman Xtreme LED Lantern

Measuring just over seven inches high and four inches wide, it is easily stowed in a com-partment or cabinet corner. It runs on three D batteries and, at a glance, isn’t very impressive looking. However, push the “on” button and this little lantern makes an amazing amount of light. It produces 300 lumens of intense light, reminiscent of an old Coleman gas lantern, and it will run continuously on the “high” setting for 72 hours or more with standard alkaline batteries. That’s three days! Amazing what they can do with LEDs these days.

The lantern has a “low” setting, which doubles the run time and also, for some reason, has a “strobe” setting. I suppose the strobe setting could be useful for something, but I’m not sure what that would be. Maybe your imagination is better than mine.

From the Manufacturer’s Description:

“This Sportsman green-and-black lantern features durable ABS construction and is engineered to be water-resistant, making it ideal for use in rugged conditions. The bottom has a convenient hook that can fold out to light up your space, be it a tent, a basement, a garage or a backyard patio—hands free. The Sportsman Xtreme Lantern also features a foldout rubberized handle for easy carrying. An easy-find green LED blinks every five seconds when the lantern is off so you can locate it even on the darkest nights. It’s backed by a lifetime warranty.”

What else can I say? It is a great way to light up your campsite!
