I learned that, if mosquitoes find you tasty (and I’m apparently classified as mosquito “candy”), they may become your number-one form of entertainment in the evening. I found that while several gallons of OFF! deep woods insect repellent was effective, a bottle of Jim Beam and a baseball bat was more satisfying. That’s the one where you drink the bottle of Jim Beam. Then when the mosquitos draining your blood get drunk enough, they’ll crash land on the floor and you can smack ’em with the bat.
Seriously though, I’ve tried about every kind of mosquito repellent: the little coils you burn, the sticky goo you spray on and citronella candles galore, but I’ve never found anything more effective than a Thermacell.
For those of you who aren’t familiar with this gadget, it is a portable, self-contained mosquito repelling device that runs on small propane cylinders. Using heat, it vaporizes a special repellent refill that creates a zone of protection as large as 15’x15′. I know, it sounds too good to be true, but it really does work.
Thermacell devices come in various shapes and can be found almost anywhere sporting goods are sold. If you plan to venture into mosquito zones, definitely pick one up. The original hand-held device will cost you about $20, and the refills are in the $5 to $7 range. The lanterns cost a little more but use the same refills.
